What We Do

What is Pilates?
Pilates is a system of exercise designed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th Century. Pilates developed his system over years of meticulous studying and research.
During World War One he was credited with rehabilitating sick and wounded soldiers with his exercises and after the war he travelled to New York and continued to refine his system with his wife, Clara.
He worked with many people, including ballet dancers and his popularity grew.
Pilates is known mostly for it's most accessible aspect- the exercises on the mat, however it continues to be a full system of exercise on the mat and other pieces of equipment, such as the reformer, chair, tower, arc barrel and cadillac to name a few.
Pilates is a low impact, mindful form of exercise with focus on strength, control, breath, mobility and flexibility. When one of Pilates most famous students, Romana Kryzanowska, was asked to describe Pilates she replied "Stretch with strength and control".
At The Powerhouse we run group, private and semi-private matwork and reformer sessions to allow you to feel the benefits of this system - each movement can be modified to suit your individual needs and as each of our sessions is taken by a Physiotherapist, you know you are in good hands.
